And just like that, winter is gone… days are longer, temperature is rising and I am already thinking about warmer days by the beach, hiking in the mountains, wearing lighter clothes and enjoying the summer with my kids…
Fortunately for me, I had a little taste of these days recently. We traveled to Lanzarote, the easternmost island in the Canary Islands. It wasn’t our first time there. Some time ago, my husband and I decided to explore all of the Canary Islands (partly because I was born in Gran Canaria and it was a very long time since I visited my hometown and I also know very little about the other islands in the archipelago). We started in 2021, a few months after my first kid was born, traveling to Lanzarote. Then, we visited Fuerteventura in 2022, and Gran Canaria in 2023. We loved these three islands, and we still want to visit the rest of them… But there’s something quite magical about Lanzarote that made us want to return to it again.
Our first time in Lanzarote left us with an incredible good impression. Just before landing, we could see the island from the sky: its reddish landscape with volcanic cones emerging on the surface here and there, the immense black lava fields covering the ground, contrasting with the small white villages, the turquoise sea water surrounding the island. Quite a first sight! Once in the island, we spent a few days exploring every corner, indulging ourselves with its incredible gastronomy and enjoying our second trip as a family of three. And I resumed one of my favorite things: photography. I came back home with thousands of photos from this incredible place! Some of them even ended in the Lodestars Issue dedicated to Spain! We knew then that Lanzarote was a very special place and that we would return, sooner or later.
The photos from this post are from that first trip in 2021. We went in November, quite a calm time to go, because it wasn’t high season and the island and its attractions didn’t feel very crowded. The first day in the island we went to one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to: Playa Papagayo, in the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches. This beautiful small cove is located in the southernmost part of the island. As it is a natural reserve, entrance is limited, and the area around the cove feels wild and untouched. The little beach is gorgeous: a small gold sand beach in the shape of a shell, with the cliffs around closing the beach and protecting it from the winds and with transparent water with tones of green and turquoise and beautiful views of Fuerteventura, Isla de Lobos and volcanoes in the horizon.
Well, I am sure anything I can say about this place is not enough to describe its beauty. So here are the photos! I’m sure you’ll like them.

I like the three birds flying towards you!
Thanks a mil!!! My sister said exactly the same thing! 🙂
Welcome back to my computer screen Mercedes! It’s good to see your photography again. Your images are beautiful and certainly added a calm tone to my morning. I hope you’ll post more often. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of Lanzarote.
Thanks a mil, Anne! You’re always so sweet! These photos have been waiting in my computer for far to long to be published, hehehe. I’m trying to post again regularly, but I’m afraid that won’t happen that frequently as I would like to, between holidays and… life with kids, hehehe…
I’m happy you like this series. I love this place so much we went again a few weeks ago, during our second trip to Lanzarote! It looks so beautiful and, at the same time, it feels very calm to enjoy with little children… I’ll post more photos of this island in the next posts, hope you like them too!
Big hug from Switzerland! Take care!
