I know. It’s been almost two and a half years since the last time I sat in front on my laptop and pressed the “publish” button to post on my blog… but too many things have happened since then. The most important one is that now I’m mum of two little kids that require my attention all the time. That doesn’t mean I forgot my camera. I use it a lot! What has changed is mostly the main theme of my photography: now I’m more focused on capturing precious instants of our family life. Especially since they seem to grow up so so fast! But we have also travelled, hiked, and visited many new places, and new photos have been accumulating in my hard disk… I feel so many things have changed in the last years, especially in social networks, where algorithms seem to only encourage creators to post videos these days to give some visibility to their work. That, for me, is actually a bit discouraging, as I only want to continue to post photos… but hey, this website started as a way to share my passion for photography and my evolution as a photographer, and I feel it should continue to be the same! So here I am again!
I took these photos in 2021. That summer wasn’t as hot as the most recent ones. We had a very rainy and cloudy summer except for a few days in August. Those days were when we decided to hide from the heat in the beautiful valley of Engadin, above 2000m from the sea level. As I mentioned in my last posts, that trip was beautiful! We hiked along beautiful paths and admiring impressive views, we ate wonderful local food, and we enjoyed every part of that first trip to the mountains with our 4 months old baby. But just as we returned to Zurich, we we received by the worst part of a summer heat wave, so we decided to run away again to the mountains, at least for one day.
The destination: Jungfraujoch! Before that day, I never imagined I would ever visit this place. Known as “the Top of Europe”, it is the home of Europe’s highest railway station, at 3453 m above the sea. It is also one of the most famous tourist attractions in Switzerland, with large crowds of people visiting it every day and not so cheap tickets. But in 2021, with some of Covid-restrictions still in place in Switzerland, was the perfect time to visit such tourist attractions (there were a lot of restrictions to enter Switzerland from abroad, so the number of tourists decreased drastically and some of these tourist destinations offered great discounts to attract local tourists). So there we went!
Here are some of the breathtaking and refreshing views we enjoyed that day. We took the new Express gondola from Grindelwald and then the Jungfrau Railway to the top of Jungfraujoch. We could admire the impressive views of the North face of the Eiger mountain, and the mesmerizing Eismeer (Sea of Ice) before we reached the top. There, we walked along the “ice palace” inside the glacier and, outdoors, we could see the impressive Jungfrau and Monch peaks, as well as the beginning of the Aletsch glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. I hope you like them!

Welcome back Mercedes! Your photography is simply beautiful, and now you have two children. How wonderful! I hope you continue to post your photographs.
Thanks a mil, Anne!!! I’m so happy to see you here again! Still taking photos? I confess I haven’t had too much time recently to go to the reader page, hehehe. Hope you’re well!
Yes, I’m still taking pictures, but at 81, not doing much hiking. I walk. My grands are pretty much grown up, so I don’t have any little ones to enjoy or take pictures of. I hope you keep blogging. I do enjoy your images. My blog is http://www.annegeephoto.com.
81? Wow! I hope I reach that age being so active, Anne! I’m really happy to see that you are still taking photos and posting so frequently, and even hosting some photo challenges on your blog now! Amazing! I hope I can take part on some of them in the future 🙂
Huge hug from Switzerland!
Hugs back. I wish I could be more active, but an auto accident slowed me down. I’d like to see you do our challenges. They really stretch your photo comfort zone, and I do want to see some more of your beautiful photos.
Oh my! These pics are amazing. Thank you for sharing them with those of us still blogging at WordPress. I don’t think I saw the Eiger – but I do recall Mt Pilatus and the wonderful scenes on the Bernina and Glacial Express. I love the sea of ice you shared here – if I had of known about the tunnel I would have visited.
Congratulations on the birth of your babies too. Precious years that go so quickly. Make the most of that time even though it is always super busy.
Thanks a million, Amanda!
Well, it seems that you did a lot of things in Switzerland that we haven’t done yet in almost 8 years, hehehe. But Jungfraujoch was, indeed, one of those opportunities we couldn’t miss! And it was incredibly beautiful and majestic. But the truth is, this is not a place many Swiss visit normally… more for foreing tourists. There’s even a Lindt shop and an Indian restaurant on the “top of Europe”, hahaha.
By the way, I’m so happy to see you still here! Hope I can find the time to catch up with your blog too! These little rascals don’t let me too much free time these days, hehehe. But yes, I’m enjoying every part of this new chapter of our lifes!
Big hug from Switzerland!
It is ironic that most Swiss folks don’t visit the top of Europe. It is often the case we pass over opportunities to see things right on our doorstep. I don’t know that I will ever get back to Switzerland so it was extra nice to see your photos. And I was surprised to see your post. I am still subscribed it seems! A good thing. Many bloggers have disappeared and I have thought about it too. The blog world is diminishing but there is a lovely community here with bloggers like you!
Well, I guess that’s one thing. Sometimes you have things so close to you that you don’t give them enough importance, or you’ll have time to visit it in the future (and eventually, you miss it!) or, in this case, even if its majestic and unique, it has become such a touristic attraction that you don’t feel like visiting it. And I think that’s the case with Jungfraujoch. Swiss prefer to go to ski or hike, see the glaciers and mountain in a less crowded and stressing environment (and cheaper too, hehehe) and leave the chocolate shop and Indian restaurant to… well, other kind of tourists, hehehe.
In my case, I admit there are a lot of places in my own country that I’ve never been! And it is now that we are exploring to some of these places when we have the chance. When I lived in Stockholm I hardly travelled outside the city in two years, something that I’ll always regret. And when I lived in Ireland, we try to explore the island a little bit more, renting a car sometimes. We learned the lesson in Switzerland and I think we’re making a good job travelling around the country, exploring its different regions!
About blogging… how is it now here? WordPress is also favoring those bloggers posting only videos like social networks do now? Or people just got bored of blogging? I feel that so many things changed in the last years on the Internet… nobody uses Facebook anymore, Instagram now is kind of copying Tiktok and only gives visibility to videos and photographers are becoming very frustrated with that…
I have noticed the tendency to videos. It is so lazy. But my blog is on a free plan so I cannot pay video. I sunny thing video is for my blog but I can see why it is gaining in popularity. The ability to read is diminishing.
Oops shoukd have proof read.. before hitting send. It should have read-
I cannot post video content on my blog. I don’t think video is for my blog…
