After spending a few days in San Francisco and the bay area, we headed south. The plan was driving along the coast, following the Highway 1 from San Francisco to Prismo Beach. But after we made the hotel reservations I started to plan the stops on the route and I saw the two closures on the Highway 1 (after the winter storms in 2017, a bridge buckled and a mudslide buried part of the road). It was a bit dissapointing. Some of the most interesting sights in this part of the trip were located between the two closures…
We decided to make something crazy. We divided the trip in two. The first day we would drive as far as the famous Bixby bridge and then go back to the Highway 101. From there, we took a small road that crosses the mountains in Los Padres National National Forest and ends at the Highway 1 between the closures so we could see the Mcway Falls, and then, go back on the same small road to the 101 and go south to Prismo beach. It doesn’t sound as crazy, right? Well, it was a veeery long and tiring trip, a trip of no more than 6 hours became more than 12 hours driving (plus all the stops we made along the way to take photos)…
But the landscapes we saw were worth the crazy trip!! The Mcway falls are the perfect postcard, specially when we arrived at the golden hour. But the rest of the coast we saw was also beautiful. In Big Sur, the Highway 1 runs along a rugged coastline formed by golden cliffs, from where the Santa Lucía Mountains rise from the sea.
