Since I started taking photos I have visited incredibly beautiful places… Iceland is by far my favorite, but there are others that have left me very impressed. Yosemite, Ireland’s west coast, Scotland… They are all gorgeous places! Here in Switzerland there are also so many incredible landscapes. But there is one that made me fall in love since the first photo I saw from it… Lauterbrunnen! I visited this place last year (you can find the photos from that trip here) and it left me speechless. Last weekend, my brother in law was in Zurich and we planned to take him to some of the most beautiful places we already know and Lauterbrunnen was indeed one of those places!
So last week I visited Lauterbrunnen again. As I mentioned in last year’s post, Lauterbrunnen (that means “valley of the many fountains”) is a deep valley in the Bernese Alps surrounded by huge mountains (the highest peak you can see from Lauterbrunnen is Jungfrau, with 4158 meters above the sea), gigantic vertical rock walls and with countless waterfalls. This time, we explored a little more the valley. We went to Murren, in one of the sides of the valley. From there, we took the cable car down to the valley again to Stechelberg and walked in the valley again to the town of Lauterbrunnen, passing by dozens of farms and waterfalls at both sides of the path. The last part of the trip was taking the mountain train to Wengen, at the other side of the valley, to enjoy the views from there.
The views of the valley from anywhere are magical… I wonder how many stories and fairy tales were inspired by this landscape (everytime I see this valley I always think on Rivendel and Tolkien’s elves). This time, the waterfalls were full of water from all the winter snow and wild flowers covered every patch of pasture. Cows and recently born calves greeted us from either side of the road and birds were chirping during the whole day…
I hope my brother in law liked this magnificent area of Switzerland! I like to think that Lauterbrunnen is one of those landscapes that, once you have visited them, you can never forget!
