A few days ago I visited Co. Wexford, a beautiful coastal region just two hours from Dublin. It was during a gorgeous autumn day, warm, sunny, with a beautiful blue sky with some cotton like clouds.
I started my short tour through Co. Wexford at Curracloe beach, a beautiful long beach of white and clean sand and wild dunes. Before heading to Wexford, I made a little stop at the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve, a small protected area where winter migrant birds stop. I was hopping to see some geese from Greenland, but I only saw common mallards, the kind of duck that is easily found in every Irish park…
After having lunch in Wexford, I visited the Hook Ring, a picturesque coastal route around the Hook peninsula that finishes at the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula. There are a lot of sights in this route, but the sun was already very low and I didn’t want to go home without reaching the lighthouse, which for me was the highlight of this trip, so I missed some of these others sights. The Hook lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in the world (the tower dates from the 12 century) and the oldest operative in Ireland. I’m glad I hurried to the lighthouse. The light was perfect, there were beautiful clouds in the sky, the wind rose and the waves were huge. The perfect conditions to play with the camera and create a dreamlike atmosphere around the lighthouse and experiment with different techniques .
This is now one of my favorite spots to photograph in Ireland. And I have to visit the rest of the sights of the Hook Ring, so I have the perfect excuse to repeat this trip in the future and visit the Co. Wexford and its beautiful lighthouse soon. 🙂
