A few weeks ago I visited Mt. Rigi, also known as the “Queen of Mountains” (from its old name, Riginum). It is located in central Switzerland, between the cantons of Schwyz and Lucerne, and almost completely surrounded by the water of the lakes Lucerne, Zug and Lauerz. Its highest peak is Rigi Kulm, at 1798 metres above the sea.
The trip to Rigi begun at Lucerne, where I took a boat to the lake town of Vitznau. From there, I took the Rigibahn, the first mountain railway in Europe, to the summit. The views from there were impressive: the snow covered Alps at one side, the lakes of Lucerne and Zug at the other… Green valleys and forests, meadows covered in wild flowers, cows, eagles and butterflies… From there, an easy walk takes you to Kaltbad, where you can take a gondola lift to Weggis (not a trip for people with fear of heights!!), another town by the Lucerne lake.
Mt. Rigi was a very nice trip. Although it was a bit misty at the lake, the views of the Alps from the lake and the summit of Mt. Rigi were very impressive. At the end of the day, the clouds covered the sky and, before arriving to Lucerne, I could see a beautiful view of Mt. Pilatus (the other famous mountain in Lucerne) covered by storm clouds and the sun light breaking through the clouds…
Here are some photos I took that day. I hope you like them!
